At the age of thirty-one he was appointed Editor of the Daily Dispatch, a leading anti-apartheid newspaper in South Africa. Until he was silenced by governmental banning orders in October 1977, he wrote the most widely read syndicated column in the country. He and his wife and their five children escaped to Britain in 1978 and settled in London, where he worked as a writer, broadcaster and lecturer on South African affairs.
